Tip #2: Hawaii has great beaches, but you have to find them

The Island of Hawaii has some incredibly beautiful beaches, including Hapuna Beach, which is consistently voted one of the best beaches in the United States. However, many of them are accessible only by four-wheel drive or on foot. The picture above shows the green sand beach of Papakolea, which is green because of the abundant olivine in the sand. Olivine is also the "diamond" that gives Diamond Head on Oahu its name, and when of gem quality it is peridot. However, getting to this beach involves a three mile drive or hike over treacherous rock and then a hike down to the green sand, so it's best reserved for the most adventurous visitors. The majority of the major resorts are situated on beautiful beaches that are easily accessible. The reason that Hawaii doesn't have as many white sand beaches is because the island is so young - at the age of 700,000 it's the baby of the family. Hawaii simply hasn't had as much time for the sand to form like it did on the older islands of Kauai and Oahu. But, it's the only island with both black and green sand beaches.
