Hula in Hawaii

Hawaiian's have a term called "chicken skin." It's the prickly sensation you get on your arms when the deep voice of the pahu drums echoes within your body and the passion of the hula kahiko(ancient hula) dancers seem to take you back hundreds of years. On the other hand, hula auana is a modern style of hula dancing, where graceful hands tell a story accompanied by ukulele and slack guitar.

There are many hula festivals in Hawaii. The Merrie Monarch on Hawaii Island is one of the most popular. The Molokai Ka Hula Piko has deep cultural roots. And the Pan-Pacific Hula Festival is a showcase of halau (schools) from Japan.
