Backing off

Hawaiian gifts

Right after a wave begins to stand up, steepen, or break in shallow water, but then moves through deeper water nearer to shore. The wave becomes significantly less steep, or the whitewater fades away as the wave moves from shallow water to deeper water. Surfers call this "backing off". This action often takes place within offshore reefs or sandbars and then the waves may well reform and break once again closer to the shoreline.
