Tip #9: History Lesson: The Big Island Is A Living Museum

Artifacts of Hawaiian history are everywhere on the Big Island. It is believed that Hawaii is where the first Polynesian settlers, masters of celestial navigation, landed over 1,000 years ago in the southernmost area of Kau. Most famously, it is the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, the warrior king who was responsible for uniting the islands.

The island of Hawaii is dotted with museums of every kind imaginable - from the state-of-the-art planetarium "Imiloa" in Hilo, to the Jaggar museum at the Volcano, to a replica of a traditional place of refuge at Puuhonua o Honaunau, there is something for every interest. Please remember to always show the greatest respect when visiting any site that is important to the Hawaiian people.
