A 21-year-old man visiting Hawaii jumped off a waterfall and was knocked unconscious before being rescued by nearby tourists.

Shiloh Shahan of California and his friend ascended Wailua Falls on the Hawaiian island of Kauai on Sept. 1. After reaching the top, Shahan decided it would be a great idea to jump off of the falls to the pool below. After reflecting on his life for a moment, Shahan took the plunge as his friend filmed the jump.

I decided, I want to jump off of this, Shahan told the San Luis Obispo Tribune on Saturday. It was at a really pivotal point in my life. Everything was changing, and it felt like the right thing to do.

Shahan says he was knocked unconscious from the fall, but he was rescued by two tourists who swam to his aid at the bottom of the falls.

The height of the falls is actually a large debate online. Some websites claim the falls has a total height of 80 feet, while others say 173 feet.

"Hey! Wake up," his friend yelled from the top of the falls, as Shahan lay in the water unconscious.

In the clip you can see Shahan floating in the water as two tourists swim from the shore to rescue him.

Another video filmed by David McGrath, a tourist standing at the bottom of the falls, shows the jump from a different angle.

I really want to give credit to them for my safety, Shahan the the Tribune. Without them, I probably wouldn't have been able to survive.

McGrath told The Garden Island that he and his daughter Sharene, who has worked as a lifeguard, recovered Shahan from the water and covered him with towels until help could arrive.

This guy escaped death, McGrath told The Garden Island.

According to the Tribune, Shahan claims he suffered a concussion as well as torn muscles in his back and chest.

Police officers and paramedics were dispatched to the scene and one officer asked Shahan if he was trying to die by suicide.

I told them, 'no, it was a calling,' Shahan said. The cop asked me, so it was something spiritual then? I said, Yes. I didn't mean to be disrespectful.

Shahan refused medical treatment and walked away from the scene on his own will.
