What It’s Like to Move to Hawaii

Big Island WaterfallSprouted coconut is amazing. Love it. Nice outdoor shower looking over a waterfall. What do we have right here? The queen of fruits right off the tree. Look at this. Found this beautiful tree out here in the jungle: mangosteen. Hands down the best one I've ever had in my life. There's a bunch more on the tree. I'll have a nice little meal right now. So good. I've already had like 15 of these. They're $8 a pound at the Hilo Market. These are way better quality. I'm so happy right now. I've never had a mono-meal of mangosteen because it's so expensive. I can't really describe it. I don't know what to tell you. It's so delicious, though. Mild but delicious.

Hey, everyone. I wanted to share a little bit about my experience so far moving to Hawaii. A lot of people have asked. It's really interesting, a lot of young people that are interested in the healthy lifestyle and living a more conscious lifestyle, and getting away from the paradigm of having a career and having that source of income that you went to college to get experience in order to receive. I think we live in a flat economy now. It's a lot of those deep wells where you can derive all your water from one well, they are drying up. You can still have the career and you can still do the traditional American dream, whatever, two and a half kids, nice car, nice house, but there are other ways to live nowadays. There always have been. There's always been rebels that have gone against the grain and done their own thing, but now with the age of the internet, things have changed a lot. I'm not saying that you have to derive income from many different streams, but it's possible. It gives you a lot more security, in my opinion, and it makes life a little bit more interesting.

I'm somewhat of a jack of all trades so I like to do a lot of different things. For me, it made sense to move to a place that was conducive to my lifestyle, mainly my diet. That logically was the Big Island. It's great to be American where you can go to a place like Hawaii, not have to do any immigration paperwork. It feels like a whole other country. The weather is nice. It was actually raining really hard this morning, but most of the time it's sunny, and most of the days, the daytimes are really sunny. I was talking to someone who's been tracking the rain for a long time. They say most of the rainfall is at night, which is nice.

Me moving to Hawaii was a leap of faith into trusting that I'll be able to, with my creative endeavors, sustain myself. I've saved up some money and I'm hoping to buy some real estate.

There's a lot of opportunities to forage food. But you have to put in the time to discover the places. You have to be respectful. You don't want to just go on someone's property. You have to make friends. You can buy stuff cheaper than what you even pay at the farmers markets. A lot of the farmers markets are really affordable. It depends on what you eat, also. Obviously, if you're eating rice and beans you can leave very cheaply. It just takes that leap of faith of going away from society if that's a goal of yours. For me, it was. This writing has been very rambly, but bottom line is Hawaii, love the climate, love all the farmers markets, love the lifestyle, the activities, the water, the sports, and the opportunity for me to devote more of my energy in a peaceful setting towards creative ways of sharing my gifts with the world.

mangosteenThe fruits, the vegetables ... I'm going to put them in some videos. I literally foraged a meal of mangosteen, like 40-50 mangosteens in my belly. That is very expensive. Those are $8 a pound. I can't tell where I found them, but it was on a property that I was looking to buy that's been neglected. It's an orchard of different fruit trees that have been neglected for the past 10 years, 15 years. Deep in there, through all of the elephant grass, I came upon a mangosteen tree. My jaw just dropped. Then I came upon another mangosteen tree. Then there's plenty of green ones, but there was lots of nice purple ones.

I'm also finding rambutan all over this property. See? Nice ones. Lots on that tree down there. Look at these guys. Foraging all kinds of stuff. There's some rambutans over here, all kinds of trees on this property. Just exploring. Black sapote. Just love delicious mamey sapote. Just tastes like pumpkin fudge pie.
