Tip #8: The Ocean - So Much To See, So Much To Do....
The Big Island is a mecca for all ocean-related sports. Whether it's snorkeling with dolphins, diving through undersea lava tubes filled with beautiful tropical fish, or sport fishing in the blue marlin capital of the world, we've got it all. Since there aren't any rivers that empty into the ocean on the Kona Coast, the water tends to have much better visibility than other dive locations. When it comes to deep sea fishing, no sooner are you out of Honokohau Harbor then you're in Grander Alley, home of 1,000 pound blue marlin. You can also fish for ahi, mahi mahi, and ono (wahoo) with experienced captains and crew.
For a one-of-a kind ocean experience, try snorkeling or scuba diving with the gentle manta rays that congregate off shore to feed on plankton at night. There's hardly any effort involved as they perform their nightly underwater ballet around you. There are over twenty different tour operations which will deliver you to the prime manta spots and even provide guides to help you get acquainted.
